The largest city on the south island Christchurch is one of the most beautiful cities we ever visited. Christchurch was hit be a large earthquake in 2010 with large aftershocks continuing to today which took down many of the old buildings. Still many buildings remain, the Avon river still flows and the parks are still open and the flowers still bloom. From Christchurch you can hike over the ridge to Lytteltown and some of the best fish and chips you will ever have. Drive or take the bus to Sumner. Check out Hagley Park and the Botanic Gardens. Do a walk along the Avon River.
