Taupo

Taupo is located at the southern edge of the north islands geothermal area. There is a large geothermal power plant close to town. The town is small enough that you do not need a car, but you will need transportation to go to the geothermal areas outside the town. There are plenty of restraurants.

The town is located on Lake Taupo. Lake Taupo is the largest lake on the north island. You can go boating or just enjoy the view from the shore. The outlet for the lake is Waikato River. Follow the walking path along the river to Huka Falls. The river is a beautiful shade of blue and very clear.
